Thank you to all our families, students, teachers and everyone who has supported our wonderful Early Learning Centre as we start Term 2 both in the centre and at home. It has certainly opened up many opportunities for us to think about how to communicate and deliver ‘teaching’ in a brand new way. I’m in awe of our wonderful staff who have supported each other through many changes and who continue to teach with love, energy and commitment.
Holiday Care
The students had a wonderful time at Holiday Care and enjoyed the many activities that were on offer. Thank you to Janice and the team for organising a very successful program.
Easter
Before the holidays we put together a special message for our beloved community. We enjoyed the photo shoot. To see this and other photos from our ELC follow us on Facebook – St Anthony’s Early Learning Centre, Wanniassa.

Garden
The staff have prioritised Quality Area 3 as part of our QIP (Quality Improvement Plan) for 2020. In response, the staff and students have committed to actively be involved in caring for the environment and being environmentally responsible within the ELC.
The students have been busy learning about compost and look after our worm farms and veggie patches but we need YOUR help. To sustain 3 worm farms and a compost bin we need more scraps. This term we will put a bin at the front of the ELC and would love you to put in your household scraps (excluding onion, meats and citrus). You can include egg shells and shredded paper. Thank you in advance.
Happy Birthday to the following people who have recently celebrated a birthday;
Aurora, Miss Steph and Carter. We hope you all had a fabulous day!
St Anthony’s Early Learning Centre is a place of wonder, creativity and collaboration. We see children as unique, capable individuals whom we trust as active protagonists of their own learning. We believe children have extraordinary potential with the capacity to express themselves, explore their worlds, and connect their thoughts, feelings and imaginings in endless ways. We support their developing potentials through creative, artistic and innovative means. We believe our role as educators, in this most critical time of a child’s life, is to nurture confidence, support the development of positive dispositions to learning and, above all, to live our belief in children’s potential. We do this in partnership with the child’s family, understanding that their parents are the first educators of their own child.
We believe learning is socially and culturally constructed, so environments that value positive, collaborative relationships will ensure we all thrive. We show our deep sense of care and respect for children, their families and each other by creating warm, inclusive environments that embrace diversity, inspire us, provoke curiosity and prompt us to wonder.
We believe time spent in the natural world is essential to growth - spiritually, socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. Our programs intend to nurture the ‘whole child’ and foster a genuine love, care and respect for nature. We do this through bringing the natural world into our indoor environments and investigating the natural world in our outdoor environment as well as ‘beyond the fence’.
When we think about the child within their family context, we do so in the broadest terms, acknowledging the diversity that exists within families and honouring the extended family members that are integral to the care and education of our children. We aim to foster strong, collaborative relationships with families building an enduring community within our early learning centre that is also firmly rooted in the broader Parish communities we support.
As a community of educators concerned with the growth of children and working within the context of our Catholic Mission, we uphold the values of trust, respect and integrity. We seek to know the aspirations of our families and endeavour to keep them at the forefront of our work to create meaningful experiences that foster a love of learning, generate a sense of reverence, and nurture the growth of kind and thoughtful citizens.
As a strong, relational and connected staff we commit to keeping relevant and up-to-date in our teaching practice by translating evidence based professional learning to create vibrant environment’s where our pedagogy is fluid, reflective and responds to the 21st century learner. We will respond to parent and community input to ensure we remain relevant and responsive to our community and contextual landscape.
Our Philosophy is a continually evolving statement based upon the values and beliefs held collectively by the ELC staff and families and is reviewed on an annual basis.

The Royal Australian Mint have released the first of three commemorative coins featuring Aboriginal Astronomy. The first release depicts the "Emu in The Sky" by Wiradjuri artist Scott "Sauce" Towney of Peak Hill, New South Wales. The "Emu in The Sky" can be seen in the dark dust lanes of the Milky Way between the Southern Cross and Scorpius.
This has been a 3-year collaborative effort between the artist, members of the Australian Indigenous Astronomy group, and the Royal Australian Mint.
The remaining two coins in the series will be released in good time and will feature the artworks of two more Indigenous artists and their interpretation of night sky Dreamings from their respective countries.
Canberra Preschooler's Health and Nutrition Survey
A local paediatric nurse and a mother with children attending St Clare of Assisi is running a research study as part of her PhD through the University of Canberra. This survery: 'The Canberra Preschooler's Health and Nutrition Survey' takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and we wanted to offer you the opportunity to partake.
The purpose of the study is to get a snapshot of local preschooler's health and nutrition. The survey includes questions about the child's dietary intake, general health and growth, chronic illnesses and use of medicines and supplements. It has full research ethics and CE Office approval (CE Office approval letter attached).
The results of the study will be used to identify any particular trends in this cohort, help guide priority setting for future research and inform local decision making. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and is accessible online or over the phone. The only criteria for participating is that the child is aged 4 or 5 years and lives in the ACT.
