What a start to the term!! We have had an action packed start to Term 2 at the ELC – and had lots of fun!!
Our excursion to Birrigai was a real treat and always one of the highlights of the year on our Preschool calendar. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to spend time outdoors, exploring our beautiful Ngunnawal Country. As the children participate in the bushwalk on country, the staff at Birrigai share so much local knowledge with them about the plants and animals that live here. We found out all sort of things; how ants nests change colour from summer to winter, so that the ants can cool down or warm their nest; How wombats can find their way back to their burrow, even though they have very poor eyesight and we learnt that the Wedge tail eagle (Maliyan) is the totem animal of the Ngunnawal people. We visited the rock shelter overlooking beautiful bushland and sitting in a space visited by generations of Ngunnawal people as a place to stay and shelter.
Naturally the campfire was also a highlight – with each student having the chance to cook some damper on a stick, holding the damper carefully over the hot coals. This was a great introduction to safety around campfires. As the weather cools in Terms 2 and 3, we will set up our fire pit for some campfires at the ELC. Each year we review our risk assessment for using the firepit at preschool with both the staff and children. We will take time to do this in the next few weeks, before setting up the fire pit space. You are very welcome to take a look at this assessment and contribute to it as well, if you have any concerns regarding children’s safety around our Fire pit.

The program is based around the 4 GEM principles: Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy. We will be working through these strategies for building resilience and wellbeing with the students and engaging in activities that allow children to practice these principles. Classes will also be building routines into their weeks that provide students with opportunities to practice showing gratitude, empathy and mindfulness.
As a part of the project each of the classes has a soft toy Koala and Class Journal. These will be brought home by a different student to share with their families each week. The class Journal activities are based around the 4 GEM principles, with simple things you can do at home with your child.
If you would like to learn more about this initiative, you can visit the Resilience Project website using the link below. In the coming weeks we hope to share some webinars with you from this project, to support you as parents in building your child’s resilience and wellbeing.
