Dear STA Families,
On Tuesday 13 June we celebrate the feast day of our school’s patron saint, Anthony of Padua. This is a significant day for our school where we celebrate St Anthony - the traits that made him a significant role model and saint, reflect on how St Anthony continues to guide us and deepen our understanding of his life and endeavours when he was alive. I urge all parents and carers to ask their children about St Anthony at the end of the day this Tuesday to see what they have learnt and experienced during our feast day celebrations.
Semester One Reports
This term, semester one reports will be shared with you via your Compass portal on Wednesday 21 June of week 9. Following the reports will be an opportunity for parents/carers to request an interview with their child’s teacher in week 10. Noting that there are no report comments this semester, however, there will be for Semester two reports.
Teachers of students in Kindergarten to Year 6 report on how a student is progressing against achievement standards for each learning area or subject in the Australian Curriculum. The Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards describe the knowledge, skills and understandings a student is expected to learn in each subject for their year level.
The end-of-semester reports for students in Years 1 to 6 provide parents with an assessment of their children’s achievement against the Achievement Standards in the Australian Curriculum for each subject studied. Grades from A to E are used to report on student progress against the standards.
The A-E scale is very much different to when grades were given in school 20 years ago. The following is an outline on how the teachers have allocated grades for semester reports. Noting that the A-E grade scale is used for Year 1-6.

When a student receives a ‘C’ grade, it means they have demonstrated the quality of learning described in the Achievement Standard, based on the content studied in the reporting period. If a student receives a ‘C’ in both semester 1 and 2 reports, it indicates that the student has made progress, and learned new knowledge and skills based on the new and more challenging material studied.
Teachers have undergone a rigorous moderation process when allocating grades by using formative, summative and diagnostic student assessments, along with on-balanced teacher judgement to determine grades. Conversations with your child’s teacher is essential to understanding how your child is progressing. I strongly encourage parents/carers to meet with your child’s teacher in week 10. Bookings can be made by logging into Compass and selecting the ‘Book Parent Student Teacher Conference’ from the options listed below your child’s name and photo.
Semester 1 Reports and Parent-Teacher Interviews
Reports will be available via Compass on Wednesday 21 June. Following this, parents and carers will have the opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher/s to discuss their learning in Week 10. Bookings will open on Compass for end-of-term parent-teacher interviews next week and will close on Friday 23 June, Week 9.
Monday morning assemblies
A reminder that we have a short assembly every Monday morning following the bell at 8.55. In this time, we acknowledge Country, share prayer together, announce birthdays for the week and celebrate student achievement with class awards, as well as remind the school of general items. If there is a public holiday on a Monday, this assembly takes place on a Tuesday morning.
Student absences
It is a requirement that an explanatory note for any absence is provided to the school from parents/carers for students in their care. Explanations for student absences can be quickly and easily submitted via Compass. When you access your child’s Compass profile via the app, you will see any outstanding explanations for absences highlighted in a green box to the right of the screen. You can then select the date/s that your child was away and type in a reason for their absence, which will then automatically update your child’s attendance record. If you would like more information or assistance on how to do this, please feel free to contact the school.
Tell Them From Me parent survey
The annual Tell Them From Me parent survey closes this Friday. We value the opinions and input from parents and carers in our community. The survey forms a part of our focus on school effectiveness, we invite students, parents and teachers to participate in an online survey. The survey is anonymous, voluntary, and participants can skip any questions they are not comfortable answering. Results will show all scores combined together – it is not possible to single out individuals in the results. Please check the link that was sent via Compass (the link is still in the Compass ‘News Feed) to access and complete the survey.

Sullivan Shield
On Thursday 1st of June St Anthony’s sent a Year 3 & 4 team and a Year 5 & 6 team to take on the might of South Canberra in the annual Sullivan Shield. Both teams were expertly prepared by their coaches, Mrs Adamson and Mr McGrath. Inspired by watching a tough contest the night before with the State of Origin, the students were ready to take the field and play an enterprising brand of rugby league which included free flowing attack based on rock solid defence. Each of the teams improved throughout the day with coaches reporting fantastic efforts in attack and defence to make the St Anthony’s community proud. The teams were a mix of experience and first timers but you could not tell they had never played together before such was their entertaining brand of footy. A big congratulations to all students who represented the school on the day. This day couldn’t of happened without our amazing teacher coaches as well as our fantastic parent coach volunteers!

Permission notes will close approximately 1 week before the competition date. This is to ensure we can enter correct number of teams, organize team lists and send out any final information.
