A prayer for mothers
Loving God,
You have loved us with an everlasting love
You have loved us even more as a mother loved her child.
Today, we give you thanks and praise for the gift of mothers.
We pray for the mothers-to-be,
who are just beginning to be the bearers of new life in them,
may they welcome their forthcoming child with loving anticipation and joy.
We pray for the young mothers,
may they cherish their child with tender care and unconditional love.
We pray for the mothers who are separated from their children, especially in times of war, poverty, conflict, violence and for any other reasons
Comfort them, strengthen their hope, and let them feel your loving embrace
that wipes every tear away.
We pray for all Mother-figures,
those who have loved, surrounded and shaped us with motherly care and compassion.
We especially pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us,
Their sacrifices and care gave us a glimpse of the extent of your love for us.
Thank you for them.
Grant health, blessings, and well-being to those mothers who are still alive.
We also remember those mothers who are no longer with us.
While they live forever in our hearts and memory grant them eternal
rest and reward for their labours.
Amen
We have been blessed with many wonderful events and celebrations in recent weeks. We had our first school fete in four years on the Saturday of week 2 this term. My sincere thanks to everyone who was involved in the organisation, preparation and running on the day of the fete. It was certainly a mammoth task and one that showcased the comradery and spirit of our St Anthony’s community. We are yet to determine the final amount raised, however, there is certainly no dollar amount that can account for the joy and fun that was shared by so many.
All K-6 classes had the pleasure of an author visit in Week 2 from our very own STA community member Sarah Wallace. Staff and students spoke very highly of Sarah’s visit: her expertise and ability to engage classes were very well received. Thank you, Sarah.
A huge thanks to all who came along to our Mother’s Day breakfast last Friday and to the staff involved in the preparation, cooking and serving of a lovely hot breakfast. My thanks also to the parents and teachers who have helped to ensure that the boys and girls OzTag Gala days went smoothly.
Prayers
We pray for our year 6 students who are making their Sacrament of Confirmation next week. May they continue to be guided by the Holy Spirit and be surrounded by love and strength from those around them.
We continue to keep in our prayers and thoughts the Kite Family. Many of you may be aware that the Kite family recently lost everything in a house fire. The school is continuing to support and communicate with Renee and the family and I understand a Go fund me page has been set up outside of school with friends of the family. Please speak with Alison Reardon our P&F president if you would like further information about how to donate.
Congratulations
Da Vinci decathlon
In one day and as one team, these eight students met at Canberra Grammar and flexed their mental muscles against other students in a decathlon .....of the MIND!
St Anthony's should be proud of their efforts in categories such as engineering, code breaking and art and poetry. We can't wait to return stronger and better than ever in 2024!
Front of school pick up and drop off zone
For the safety of all children, please remind your child that they must be seated out the front of the school and not playing ball games. A number of students have been running on to the road to collect balls from games they are playing. As you can appreciate this is a high traffic area.
Gates open and Supervision of students begins at 8.30am.
Please remember that the front of the school area is zoned as a kiss-and-ride and as a bus stop and are not parking areas. We understand that on a busy day, parking can be difficult. However, please respect these zones to ensure a quick and safe drop-off for all our students.
High school enrolments
Reminder: High school enrolments are now open.
Please ensure that your Year 6 child’s enrolment application is in on time for their potential high school. I cannot stress enough that enrolment applications need to be in before the close of business next Friday 26th of May. Primary schools do not enrol students into high school. It is the role of the parent/guardian to complete this process. Please note that student reports can be accessed through your child’s Compass portal. Thank you for your understanding.
School Photos.
Our school photos will take place on Wednesday 31 May. Students need to wear their full winter uniform. School photos are now ready to order through the Compass Portal. To place your order, make sure you have your COMPASS login details handy. Please visit https://www.compass.education/guide#photos if unsure please or get in touch with the school front office.
Once you have placed your Individual Photo order your can place your Sibling photo order, these MUST be ordered before midnight prior to photo day. Please note that after 14/06/2023 an archive fee of $20.00 will apply.
Please remind your child that they are having their photos taken, if they are having a sibling photo, all siblings will need to be ready for their photos at the allocated time set by the school. Sibling photos will be in the school hall between 8am and 9am. Please check Compass or contact the school for more information.
Communication
Every Sunday afternoon at 4pm a weekly overview of the upcoming school-based events for the week is published on the school's FaceBook page and sent out via the Compass app (found in the news feed) to parents and carers. These ‘what’s on’ messages stay visible for at least four weeks. The school website also has a regularly maintained and updated calendar that is synced with the Compass school calendar, both of which display all of the upcoming school events and other relevant information where necessary.
The Matt Giteau Cup will take place this Thursday, 18 May in Queanbeyan. My thanks to Mr VanMeurs for accompanying students to this event.
Year 4 will be leading a Grade Showcase Assembly this Friday, May 19 in the school hall from 12pm.
Next Monday, the 22nd of May, our Year Six students will all be engaging in a Confirmation Retreat Day. The Confirmation Retreat Day is a faith-filled experience for all of our Year Six students at St Anthony's (this includes those students not receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this year as well). Led by our REC Miss Lehmensich, our Year 6 teachers and our Youth Minister, the day is packed with games, activities, videos and talks that all look into the significance and meaning of the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Year 6 students receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation will do so on Thursday, May 25 at 5:30pm in the Church. Please keep these students in your thoughts and prayers.
2A will be leading our Prayer focus assembly on Friday, May 26th at 12pm in the school hall.

Oztag
On Thursday of week 3, Students from Years 3-6 entered the Girls South Canberra Oztag Competition. We were playing in the Year 5/6 competition but had students from each year group. We were very excited and couldn’t wait for our first game. For some, it was our first ever game of Oztag so there was some nerves but we took the field and were able to pick up our first win for the day outscoring our opposition 9-1. The next two games proved a little tougher with both teams we played well drilled and experienced. We played our hearts out but went down in both games. After learning some tough lessons, we were prepared for our fourth game. Our defence was rock solid not conceding a try and we clicked into gear in attack managing to score 7 tries. We got our second win for the day, outscoring our opponents 7-0. Our last game was a another tough game where we lost but managed to get two great tries.
We couldn’t of played so well if it wasn’t for the guidance of our amazing coach Mrs Stankovic. Thanks for coaching us!

We played a number of tough games throughout the day but were able to play some free flowing footy in attack and had steely defence on the try line. Our first game we played was against St Clares of Assisi and we won 5-3. It was a great result and gave us the confidence to carry on and play an exciting brand of footy for the rest of the day. Next, we came up against a strong St Edmunds team and went down in a hard fought contest 5-2. We quickly rebounded from the loss to pick up a 7-3 win over Holy Family. The tries didn’t stop there as we managed to put 10 on Gordon primary in the next game, winning 10-0. Our defence was set now and kept another clean sheet in our next game, winning 7-0 over St Clares.
Our results meant we qualified for finals and we had another game against St Clares in the semi finals. It was a high scoring match of end to end footy and we were able to get across the line and into the final with a 7-5 victory.
The final was a chance to get one back on St Edmunds who were the only team to beat us during the day. After a tough and tense game with both teams playing their best footy, we managed to win in a thriller! We claimed victory in the final with a 4-3 win!
It was a great day and couldn't have done it without our amazing coaches! We thank all the people for helping out on the day, especially our amazing coaches, Mrs Taryn Crick and Mr Garreth Wigg.

Year 3/4 Boys Oztag Report by Lucas
On Wednesday 10 May Years 3 & 4 entered a team in the ACT South Oztag competition. We arrived and met our coach Mrs Wilson and were very excited for the day. We all got our jerseys on and then were ready to go for the first game. We played Taylor Primary and had an exciting 3 all draw. After the first game we had training to improve passing for our next game. Our second game we played St Clares of Assisi and played better in the second game with improved passing but went down 5-2. Our third game was our best game yet with a 4-3 victory to us. Our next two games were tough but enjoyable games and unfortunately, we did not win. Our last game of the day we were keen to get another win and played our best game of the day winning 5 to 3.
Thanks for coaching us Mrs Wilson, you were awesome!

Sport Extravaganza
Monday 15th of May St Anthony’s hosted our first Sports Extravaganza. This was a time to recognize all the success we have had over our sports carnivals this year. Ribbons and Age Champion medals were presented to students based on achievements at the swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals. The day also featured a fun afternoon of sports and sausage. Full list of award winners can be found at the end of this newsletter.
Permission Notes on Compass
All sport days will have permission notes published on compass. It is vital that these are completed by the due date to ensure students place on the team. No late entries will be accepted. Permission notes will close approximately 1 week before competition date. This is to ensure we can enter correct number of teams, organize team lists and send out any final information.
Students must have completed a compass permission note before the due date to be considered for team selection.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW)
The National Reconciliation Week 2023 theme is ‘Be a Voice for Generations – Act Today for a Reconciled Tomorrow.
NRW is held each year from 27 May – 3 June (Week 5- Week 6) – Here is an outline of how St Anthony’s will celebrate the week.
Monday 29 May 2023 (start of Week 6) is the Reconciliation Day Public Holiday.
Our Reconciliation Week focus assembly will be led by our First Nations students and Five Assisi on Friday 2nd June in the school hall at 12:00 pm. We warmly invite all our First Nations families and 5 Assisi families to join us in the hall for this assembly. During this assembly, we will share a slideshow of what it means to live on Ngunnawal land. We invite all our families to send in a photo or a video (maximum 10 seconds) of your child/ren/family enjoying your Reconciliation Week long weekend. to beth.lehmensich@cg.catholic.edu.au to be included in the slideshow.
Photos need to be emailed by 6pm on Monday 29th May 2023.
Students will also be participating in some reconciliation focused activites in their classrooms and during library lessons in week 6.
Friday 2nd June (Week 6) will be an out of uniform day.
We invite all students and staff to come dressed in the colours of our Australian, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander flags. For students who specially identify with another nationality feel free to come in the colours of your flag or even in national dress.
On Friday 2nd June, after lunch, we will be participating in a Reconciliation March around the top oval as a powerful reminder of all people coming together in the spirit of reconciliation. In the event of inclement weather this will be done on the walkway by our First Nations students. Students are encouraged to bring or make flags or banners focusing on this year’s theme for this event We look forward to celebrating this important week.
