Miss Bec will be away over the rest of Week 9 of the term. She is joining other Directors from Catholic Education to attend the Early Childhood National Conference. This is a fabulous opportunity for Miss Bec to hear about some of the great initiatives that are happening in Early Learning Centres throughout the Country. I am sure she will come back inspired, with lots of ideas to share!

While Miss Bec is away, Miss Kim will be the RPIC at our service. Please speak to Kim if you have any concerns that arise during the week.

It is that time of the term and year when packing lunchboxes can be more of a chore than a joy, so we thought we would share some of these ideas, easily accessible online, to assist families and set our children up for success.

At home, incorporating various meals and rituals into children's education about culture can be an enjoyable approach for encouraging them to try different foods. They can learn about different customs and practices and develop a broader palette by trying new foods and flavours from different nations.

Learning about different cuisines and strengthening family ties can both be achieved through cooking together. Try preparing tacos for Mexico, pasta for Italy, or sushi for Japan. Encourage your kids to participate in meal preparation by having them assist with combining ingredients or arranging the table in accordance with local traditions.

How can I encourage healthy eating habits?

Showing your child how to eat healthily now maximises their ability to make healthy choices as they get older. Here are some tips to encourage healthy eating habits:

  • Sit together as a family at mealtimes, without any screens.
  • Make healthy foods fun, for example by cutting fruit or sandwiches into interesting shapes.
  • Serve a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables.
  • Learn together about how different foods are grown.
  • Let your children help with food shopping and preparation and try new foods and recipes together.
  • Limit the amount of junk food you keep in the house.
  • Keep a bowl of fruit handy for snacks.

As the weather improves, why not take a visit to the community gardens around town. The Kambah community garden welcomes visitors and holds occasional open day events with food stalls and plant sales.
