Preschool News

DT3I1.pngThere have been so many beautiful art experiences for the children to engage with in the last few weeks of Preschool. Art is such an important tool for learning and it is so lovely to see the pride and satisfaction the students get from their work. Art is very much a precursor to literacy skills. Through drawing, painting, making and creating children are able to express ideas and convey meaning. Through art children start to build their understanding that we can represent our thinking to others in symbolic ways, which is an essential understanding for children before they engage with print as a means of expression. Art activities are also a fundamental way children can develop essential fine motor skills. As they engage in art experiences they are learning to hold and manipulate a range of drawing materials, building strength and dexterity as they sculpt clay or cut out different materials.

As you look through your child’s portfolio over the next week or so I hope you enjoy looking at some of the beautiful creations they have made at preschool and have the opportunity to hear from your child the meanings behind their creations.

Afternoon Routines

We have been reflecting on our afternoon routines and wanted to open up the ELC more to families picking up their children at 3pm. With our new routine you are most welcome to come inside and wait in the ELC foyer or hallway as our core preschool program finishes up for the day. Once the glass doors into classrooms are open you are welcome to come in and pick up your child. We hope this gives you the opportunity to speak with the different teachers and educators working in your child’s classroom and a chance to have a look at some of the things children have been up to during their day.

Each class will also display the weekly teaching and learning program in the hallway outside their room. Please feel free to look at this! We are also planning to set up a suggestion or feedback box where you can comment on children’s interests, ask questions or suggest learning possibilities for the program. The classrooms also have a Learning Journal that you can have a look through. This is created at the end of the day with small groups of children and shows photos of their learning and some of their thoughts and reflections on their day.
